War record

Formed at Shizuoka→fought across the China front in the Second Sino-Japanese War (from 1937)→moved to Leyte by way of Manchuria (October–November 1944)→committed to the "Wa" Operation to retake the Burauen airfields (November 1944)→joined the main body of the 26th Division in December and fought on almost unarmed→was all but destroyed in the retreat from Leyte

According to the book, the regiment numbered roughly 13,000 men when it set out on Leyte, but was reduced in the end to only a very small number of survivors.
