War record

September 1942 (part of the 2nd Division). The 川口 Detachment (built around the regiment of 岡明之助, under Major General 川口清健) was formed as the second wave to retake Guadalcanal→landed near Taivu Point, west of the island, by way of the Philippines→mid-September, planned an all-out attack on Centipede Ridge (south of the airfield)→made the attack on the night of 13 September, but it failed against American gunfire and prepared positions→withdrew into the jungle with heavy losses

According to the book, the attack failed because of insufficient intelligence on the enemy, misjudgment of the dense-jungle terrain, and committing troops piecemeal.

What is still not known
  • Men of this unit: apart from the commander, no names have been gathered yet.

This card is made only of facts copied from one book. Only what can be confirmed against a primary source will one day become 🟢. An empty field means the book does not say. Nothing has been filled in by guesswork.
