War record

30 June 1943, received its colours at Gifu→under the 43rd Division, took up the defence of Saipan as part of the Saipan area group→15 June 1944, US forces landed and it fought them at the water's edge→before dawn on 16 June the 1st Battalion and others made a night attack but took heavy losses→18 June, the whole force fell back to the foot of Mount Tapotchau→7 July, made a banzai charge→the commander of the Saipan area group, Lieutenant General 南雲忠一, took his own life

According to the book, Vice Admiral 南雲忠一 took his own life, and in the end the officers and men carried out a "banzai charge."
