Formed at Yamagata in 1943→moved to the Pacific area (western New Guinea) and took up the defence of the Sarmi district under the 36th Division→April 1944, strengthened the defences and prepared to counter-attack after the American landing at Hollandia→tried to counter-attack in the Maffin and Arare sectors but repeatedly fell back for lack of strength→continued protracted defensive fighting around Sarmi

At Sarmi the regiment attempted to counterattack the American forces that had landed at Hollandia, but, short of troops, was forced to fall back repeatedly.
