War record

Raised after the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War (around 1939); moved out from Guangdong Province in China just before the Pacific War began and took part in the assault on Hong Kong→March 1942, landed in Bantam Bay in the Java operation as the 東海林 Detachment (built around the 230th Infantry Regiment)→given the task of pushing on to Kalijati airfield and the Bandung fortress→5 March, sent the 江頭 Detachment ahead on its own initiative to storm the key ground at Bandung→8 March the Netherlands Indies forces surrendered on the Bandung front and the operation succeeded

According to the book, Detachment Commander 東海林 was detained in the Dutch East Indies after the war on suspicion of war crimes over his conduct during the Hong Kong campaign, delaying his return home.
