September 1943 – March 1944 (part of the 中井 Detachment). After the withdrawal from Lae, the 中井 Detachment (built around the 78th Infantry Regiment) covered the move to Madang by way of the Finisterre Range→counter-attacked the Australian troops who had dropped by parachute at Nadzab and fought covering actions in the Finisterre Range→January 1944, resisted the US and Australian forces that landed at Saidor
