1926年9月25日 進水→1927年9月20日 竣工→1941年12月8日の太平洋戦争開戦時、第六戦隊所属でグアム島攻略作戦・ウェーク島攻略作戦など中部太平洋の作戦に参加→1942年8月8〜9日、第一次ソロモン海戦に参加→1942年10月11〜12日、サボ島沖海戦に参加。敵重巡の初弾が艦橋を貫通し五藤存知司令官ら幹部が戦死→1943年4月3日、ニューアイルランド島カビエンでアメリカ軍機（B-17）の爆撃を受け被弾、擱座→1944年10月、捷号作戦（レイテ沖海戦）で第十六戦隊旗艦として後方兵員輸送を命じられ、10月23日ルソン島西方でアメリカ潜水艦ブリームの雷撃により大破→1945年7月24日・28日、呉軍港空襲で命中弾を受け艦尾がほぼ切断状態となり着底→1945年7月28日、呉にてアメリカ軍機の攻撃を受け大破、着底（呉軍港空襲）。1945年11月20日除籍。1946年11月より播磨造船の手により解体（infoboxでは1947年7月1日解体）。
青葉型重巡洋艦の1番艦。1942年10月のサボ島沖海戦で艦橋に敵弾が命中し、五藤存知司令官ら幹部が戦死した。
