1927年4月16日 進水→1929年7月31日 竣工→1937年（昭和12年）、支那事変（日中戦争）の上海上陸作戦に従事、妙高型4隻で第五戦隊を編成→1941年12月8日の太平洋戦争開戦直後、比島部隊所属でダバオ・ホロ攻略作戦に従事→1942年5月、珊瑚海海戦でMO機動部隊旗艦（第五戦隊司令官高木武雄少将座乗）を務める→1943年11月1〜2日、ブーゲンビル島沖海戦に参加（回避行動中に駆逐艦初風と衝突）→1944年10月24日、レイテ沖海戦のシブヤン海海戦で右舷後部に魚雷1本が命中し落伍、第五戦隊旗艦を羽黒に交代→1944年12月13日、仏印沖でアメリカ潜水艦バーゴールの雷撃を受け航行不能となり、羽黒に曳航されシンガポールへ→1946年7月8日、マラッカ海峡でキングストン・バルブを開き海没処分。1946年8月10日除籍。
妙高型重巡洋艦のネームシップ。1932年の五・一五事件で犬養毅首相を襲撃した三上卓中尉は妙高の乗組員だった。
