1928年4月22日 進水→1929年8月20日 竣工→1937年5月20日、イギリスのジョージ6世戴冠記念観艦式に参加し、その後ドイツを訪問→1941年7月、南部仏印進駐（ふ号作戦）に参加→1941年12月、フィリピン進攻作戦に比島部隊主隊として参加→1942年3月1日、スラバヤ沖海戦に参加→1944年10月、レイテ沖海戦に志摩艦隊所属で参加→1944年12月24日〜28日、礼号作戦（ミンドロ島突入作戦）に参加→1945年6月8日、バンカ海峡北口付近でイギリス海軍潜水艦トレンチャントの雷撃を受けて沈没。1945年8月20日除籍。
1937年の観艦式派遣の際、イギリスにおいて「飢えた狼（餓えた狼）」という異名をつけられた
