1930年6月16日 進水→1932年3月30日（就役） 竣工→1941年12月8日、太平洋戦争開戦時、南方部隊本隊（第二艦隊旗艦）として南方海上で開戦を迎える→1942年6月、ミッドウェー海戦に攻略部隊本隊の旗艦として参加→1942年10月26〜27日、南太平洋海戦に前進部隊旗艦として参加→1942年11月14〜15日、第三次ソロモン海戦に参加→1943年11月5日、ラバウル進出直後に米機動部隊の空襲を受け被弾、艦長・中岡信喜大佐以下18名戦死→1944年10月23日、レイテ沖海戦においてパラワン水道で被雷し沈没→1944年10月23日、パラワン水道でアメリカの潜水艦ダーターの雷撃を受けて沈没。1944年12月30日除籍。
