1934年3月14日 進水→1935年7月28日（就役） 竣工→1942年3月1日、バタビア沖海戦に参加し米重巡ヒューストン、豪軽巡パースを砲雷撃で撃沈→1942年6月5日、ミッドウェー海戦に参加、退避中に僚艦三隈と衝突事故を起こし、その後空襲で爆弾5発を被弾→1943年11月5日、ラバウル進出直後に米機動部隊の空襲を受け爆弾1発が命中→1943年12月〜1944年2月、佐世保工廠で航空巡洋艦へ改装→1944年6月、マリアナ沖海戦に小沢機動部隊として参加→1944年10月25日、レイテ沖海戦のスリガオ海峡海戦で西村艦隊の一員として参加、大破し自沈処分→1944年10月25日、スリガオ海峡海戦で大破し、駆逐艦曙による雷撃で自沈処分。1944年12月20日除籍。
ミッドウェー海戦後に航空巡洋艦へ改装され、太平洋戦争中に二度（三隈、那智と）の衝突事故に見舞われた
