1937年11月21日 進水→1938年11月20日 竣工→1941年12月8日、真珠湾攻撃に参加。索敵機を発進させた→1942年6月、ミッドウェー海戦に参加→1942年8月-10月、第二次ソロモン海戦・南太平洋海戦に参加→1944年3月、サ号作戦（ビハール号事件）に参加→1944年6月、マリアナ沖海戦に参加→1944年10月、レイテ沖海戦（捷一号作戦）に参加。サマール沖海戦では空母ガンビア・ベイを砲撃で撃沈した→1945年7月28日、呉軍港空襲でアメリカ軍艦載機の攻撃を受け、左舷後部に直撃弾2発と至近弾6発を受けて大浸水、7月29日に着底。1945年11月20日除籍。1947年4月7日から播磨造船所呉船渠で解体に着手し、1948年5月4日浮揚、同年9月30日解体完了。
艦前部に主砲塔4基を集中し後部を飛行機発進甲板・水上偵察機待機所とした、第二次世界大戦当時としては珍しい艦型。艦名は海上自衛隊のあぶくま型護衛艦「とね」に継承された。
