1918年3月11日 進水→1919年11月20日 竣工→1923年9月、関東大震災の救援活動に従事し、避難民の輸送や物資の揚陸を行った→1941年12月、ウェーク島攻略作戦に参加し対地砲撃を行った→1942年、ポートモレスビー攻略作戦（MO攻略部隊掩護部隊）に参加→1942年8月8-9日、第一次ソロモン海戦に参加→1942年11月、第三次ソロモン海戦で第七戦隊の護衛任務に従事→1942年12月18日、マダン上陸作戦支援中に雷撃を受け沈没→1942年12月18日、マダン上陸作戦支援中にマダン港外でアメリカ潜水艦アルバコアの雷撃を受け、23時に南緯5度8分東経145度57分地点で沈没。1943年2月1日除籍。
龍田と共に日本海軍最初の軽巡洋艦。軽巡洋艦夕張をのぞけば軽巡洋艦中で最小の艦。
