1923年3月5日 進水→1923年7月31日 竣工→1937年9月、駆逐艦「追風」「疾風」と共に珠江を遡上し中華民国海軍の巡洋艦と交戦、撃沈→1941年12月、ウェーク島攻略戦に従事→1942年8月、第一次ソロモン海戦に第八艦隊指揮下で参加→1943年7月、ニュージョージア島攻防戦従事中にショートランド泊地で機雷により損傷→1943年11月、沈没した「川内」に代わり第三水雷戦隊旗艦となる→1944年3-4月、松輸送（東松三号船団）・西カロリン諸島輸送作戦に従事→1944年4月28日、パラオ諸島方面でアメリカ潜水艦ブルーギルの雷撃を受け大破、五月雨・夕月による救援中に沈没。1944年6月10日除籍
平賀譲設計による小型軽巡で「実験艦」的性格を持ち、後年の重武装コンパクト艦設計の礎となったとされる
