1912年11月21日 進水→1914年8月4日 竣工→1941年12月8日 真珠湾攻撃を行う南雲機動部隊の支援部隊として参加→1942年6月 ミッドウェー海戦に参加→1942年8月24日 第二次ソロモン海戦に参加→1942年10月26日 南太平洋海戦に参加→1942年11月12-13日 第三次ソロモン海戦で損傷し操舵不能となり、翌日の空襲を受け自沈→1942年11月13日、第三次ソロモン海戦での損傷後、空襲を受け自沈。1942年12月20日、練習戦艦のまま除籍
ロンドン軍縮条約により武装等を撤去され練習戦艦となったが、昭和天皇の御召艦として周知され親しまれた。2019年に沈没船体が発見された
