1940年11月1日 進水→1942年8月5日 竣工→1943年2月11日 大和に代わり連合艦隊旗艦となる（トラック泊地）→1944年3月29日 パラオからダバオへ移動中、米潜水艦タニーの雷撃を受け小破→1944年6月 マリアナ沖海戦に参加→1944年10月24日 レイテ沖海戦のシブヤン海海戦で米軍機の集中攻撃（魚雷・爆弾多数命中）を受け転覆・沈没（栗田艦隊の「被害担当艦」となった）→1944年10月24日、シブヤン海（レイテ沖海戦）で米軍機の攻撃を受け転覆・沈没。1945年8月31日除籍
大和型戦艦2番艦。2015年にポール・アレンの調査チームがシブヤン海水深1000mの海底で船体を発見した
