1944年10月8日(もしくは10月6日、10月5日) 進水→1944年11月19日 竣工→1940年4月7日または5月4日 横須賀海軍工廠で起工(大和型戦艦3番艦として)→1942年7月 空母への設計変更が決定→1944年10月8日 命名式、横須賀鎮守府籍となる→1944年11月11日・12日 東京湾で航空公試(各種艦載機の発着艦実験)実施→1944年11月28日 横須賀出港、第十七駆逐隊護衛のもと呉へ回航中→1944年11月29日 アーチャーフィッシュの雷撃を受け沈没→1944年11月29日、横須賀から呉へ回航中、紀伊半島潮岬沖でアメリカ海軍潜水艦アーチャーフィッシュの雷撃(魚雷4本命中)を受け、同日午前10時57分頃(55分説あり)転覆沈没。1945年8月31日除籍。
竣工から10日、出港からわずか17時間で沈没した。第二次世界大戦に参加した最大の航空母艦であり、潜水艦に撃沈された艦としては最も巨大な船とされる。大和型戦艦3番艦として建造中に空母へ設計変更された。
