1933年11月4日 進水→1934年9月27日 竣工→1942年1-3月 南方作戦(ケンダリー攻略・マカッサル攻略・バリ島攻略作戦)に従事→1942年5月-1943年 アリューシャン方面(AL作戦)に参加、アッツ島・キスカ島方面で行動→1943年3月 アッツ島沖海戦に参加→1943年7月 キスカ島撤退作戦に参加→1944年6月 マリアナ沖海戦に補給部隊護衛艦として参加→1945年4月7日 坊ノ岬沖海戦(大和特攻)に参加、大和沈没後に浜風・矢矧の生存者を救助→1945年7月30日、宮津湾空襲で触雷し大破・擱座、さらに爆雷が誘爆して沈没。1945年9月30日除籍。
『呉の雪風、佐世保の時雨』とともに幸運艦とされることがある初春型駆逐艦。坊ノ岬沖海戦を軽微な被害で生還したが、終戦直前の触雷により失われた。
