1935年5月18日 進水→1936年9月7日 竣工→1937年8-9月 第二次上海事変に参加、黄浦江突入・砲撃等に従事→1942年5月 珊瑚海海戦に参加→1942年6月 ミッドウェー海戦に主力部隊護衛として出撃→1942年8月-1943年 ガダルカナル島の戦いで鼠輸送(東京急行)に10回従事→1944年6月 マリアナ沖海戦に参加→1944年10月 レイテ沖海戦(スリガオ海峡夜戦)に西村艦隊の一艦として参加、被雷を免れて単艦で生還→1945年1月24日、ヒ87船団護衛中にマレー半島沖(北緯6度0分東経103度45分)で米潜水艦(ブラックフィン)の雷撃を受け沈没。1945年3月10日除籍。
『呉の雪風、佐世保の時雨』と呼ばれ、米海軍史家サミュエル・モリソンが著書で「幸運艦」「不滅艦」と記した。白露型駆逐艦10隻の中で最後まで残存した艦であった。
