1921年11月13日 進水→1922年12月27日 竣工→1920年12月16日 浅野造船所で起工→1923年 日本人操縦士(吉良俊一大尉)による日本初の艦上機着艦に成功→1932年 第一次上海事変に参加→1937年 日中戦争(第二次上海事変)に参加→1942年6月 ミッドウェー作戦で戦艦大和以下主力部隊の護衛艦として参加(米艦隊との直接交戦なし)→1946年 復員輸送艦として南方からの復員輸送に従事→終戦時ほぼ無傷で残存し、復員輸送艦として1946年8月まで内地・南方間を9往復、約4万人を輸送。1946年8月31日から1947年5月1日にかけて日立造船築港工場で解体。1945年10月5日除籍。
起工時から航空母艦として設計され完成した世界初の新造空母。終戦時に航行可能だった空母3隻(鳳翔・龍鳳・葛城)のうち、ほぼ無傷だったのは鳳翔のみだった。
