1939年6月1日 進水→1941年8月8日 竣工→1937年12月12日 横須賀海軍工廠で起工→1941年12月 真珠湾攻撃に参加→1942年4月 セイロン沖海戦に参加→1942年5月 珊瑚海海戦で被弾、大破→1942年8月 第二次ソロモン海戦に参加→1942年10月 南太平洋海戦で被弾、大破→1944年6月19日 マリアナ沖海戦(あ号作戦)で被雷、沈没→1944年6月19日、マリアナ沖海戦でアメリカ潜水艦カヴァラの雷撃(魚雷3ないし4本命中)を受け沈没(沈没地点は日本側記録で北緯12度0分、東経137度46分)。1945年8月31日除籍。
真珠湾攻撃・珊瑚海海戦・南太平洋海戦での奮戦により、姉妹艦瑞鶴とともに3回の感状を授与された。艦歴は2年10か月。
