1921年11月29日 進水→1924年6月20日 竣工→1925年12月 伊号第百五十二潜水艦と共に第二艦隊第2潜水戦隊第17潜水隊を編成→1931年 呉工廠で水上機格納筒を装備し発着試験を実施(日本海軍潜水艦で初の水上機発着試験)→1933年 呉式1号2型射出機を後甲板に試験装備し水上機発進試験を実施→1935年11月 第17潜水隊解隊に伴い呉鎮守府付属となる→1940年4月1日 太平洋戦争開戦前に除籍→1940年4月1日除籍。1941年売却。太平洋戦争開戦前に除籍されたため戦歴なし。
海大型潜水艦系列の最初の艦(海大I型、同型艦なし)。日本潜水艦で初めて水上機の発着試験を行った。
