1936年7月20日 進水→1938年12月5日 竣工→1941年12月 真珠湾攻撃時に第3潜水戦隊旗艦としてオアフ島付近に出撃→1942年5月6日 マーシャル東方海面で味方機に誤爆され大破、修理→1943年6月-12月 第2次遣独潜水艦作戦でドイツ・ブレストへ往復、日独の完全往復に成功した唯一の艦となる→1944年3-7月 インド洋で通商破壊戦に従事し複数の商船を撃沈→1945年3月20日 沖縄来攻に伴い佐伯を出港、3月28日の報告を最後に消息不明→1945年3月31日、沖縄本島沖(北緯25度29分東経128度35分付近)で米駆逐艦ストックトン・モリソンの攻撃により撃沈。艦長篠原茂夫少佐以下ほぼ全員戦死(生存確認1名、向井隆昌二曹)。1945年8月10日除籍。
遣独潜水艦作戦でドイツと日本を完全往復した唯一の潜水艦。艦長有泉龍之助の時期に、撃沈した蘭貨物船ティラサックおよび米リバティ船ジーン・ニコレットの生存者に対する殺害事件が発生したことが本文に記載されている。
