1940年6月8日 進水→1941年10月15日 竣工→1941年12月 真珠湾攻撃時にオアフ島北東沖を哨戒→1942年2-3月 オーストラリア・ニュージーランド方面の航空偵察に従事→1942年6月21-22日 フォート・スティーブンス陸軍基地を艦砲射撃(フォート・スティーブンス砲撃)→1942年9月 搭載機によりオレゴン州の山林に焼夷弾を投下(アメリカ本土空襲)→1942年10月11日 ソ連潜水艦L-16を誤って雷撃・撃沈(日ソ中立条約下)→1943年8月25日、バヌアツのヒウ島沖(南緯13度10分東経165度27分付近)で米駆逐艦パターソンの爆雷攻撃により撃沈。艦長小比賀勝中佐以下乗員100名全員戦死。1943年10月24日亡失認定、12月1日除籍。
アメリカ合衆国本土を潜水艦搭載偵察機で複数回爆撃し、また米英戦争以来130年ぶりとなるアメリカ本土基地への艦砲射撃(フォート・スティーブンス砲撃)を行ったことで知られる。
