1940年9月17日 進水→1942年2月28日(当初は伊号第三十五潜水艦と命名、1941年11月1日に伊号第三十潜水艦へ改称) 竣工→1942年5月 アデン・ジブチ・ザンジバル・ダルエスサラーム等を航空偵察→1942年6月17日 第1次遣独潜水艦作戦としてドイツへ向け出港→1942年8月6日 フランス・ロリアン港に到着し、零式水上偵察機や航空魚雷設計図等をドイツ側に引き渡す→1942年8月22日 ロリアンを出港し帰路につく→1942年10月13日 シンガポールでエニグマ暗号機を陸揚げした直後、出港時に触雷し沈没→1942年10月13日、シンガポール出港直後に触雷し沈没。死者14名(資料により13名とも)。1944年4月15日除籍。1959年8月に浮揚、1960年2月に解体。
第一次遣独潜水艦作戦に従事したことで知られる。触雷は、機雷除去済み航路の変更が変更後の暗号文で伝えられていたが本艦がこれを把握していなかったことが原因とされる。
