1939年11月27日 進水→1941年9月25日 竣工→1938年5月25日 川崎造船所で起工→1941年12月 真珠湾攻撃に参加→1942年4月 セイロン沖海戦に参加→1942年5月 珊瑚海海戦に参加→1942年8月・10月 第二次ソロモン海戦・南太平洋海戦に参加→1944年6月 マリアナ沖海戦に参加(旗艦大鳳沈没後、小沢司令長官が瑞鶴に移乗)→1944年10月25日 レイテ沖海戦(エンガノ岬沖海戦)で沈没→1944年10月25日、レイテ沖海戦のエンガノ岬沖海戦でアメリカ軍艦載機の攻撃を受け、魚雷7本・爆弾5～7発が命中し沈没(沈没地点は北緯19度57分、東経126度34分と記録)。1945年8月31日除籍。
マリアナ沖海戦まで一度も被弾しなかった「幸運艦」と称された。真珠湾攻撃に参加した空母6隻のうち最後まで残り、機動部隊として作戦参加できた最後の正規空母だった。
