1941年11月1日 進水→1942年9月30日(当初は伊号第四十七潜水艦と命名、1941年11月1日に伊号第三十六潜水艦へ改称) 竣工→1943年1-2月 ガダルカナル島・ラバウル・ラエ方面で複数回の輸送任務(鼠輸送)に従事→1943年10月 ハワイ真珠湾の航空偵察を実施(搭載機は帰還せず行方不明)→1944年9月 後部主砲を撤去し回天4基搭載可能に改造され回天母艦となる→1944年11月 回天特別攻撃隊(菊水隊)としてウルシー環礁を攻撃、回天を発進→1945年1月 回天特別攻撃隊(金剛隊)としてウルシー環礁を攻撃→1945年6月 回天特別攻撃隊(轟隊)として出撃、回天で米艦を撃破、米駆逐艦の爆雷攻撃を受けるも生還→終戦まで残存。1945年11月30日除籍。1946年4月1日、日本潜水艦処分の「ローズエンド作戦」により五島列島沖で海没処分。2017年に沈没艦位置が調査・特定された。
伊十五型潜水艦(巡潜乙型)のうち唯一太平洋戦争を生き残った艦。映画『出口のない海』に登場する伊号潜水艦のモデルとされる。
