1936年11月29日 進水→1938年7月25日(水上機母艦として)。1943年8月1日空母への改造完成、同年12月15日航空母艦に類別変更。 竣工→1934年11月26日 呉海軍工廠で起工(水上機母艦として)→1942年6月 ミッドウェー攻略作戦に第十一航空戦隊として参加→1942年8月 第二次ソロモン海戦に参加→1943年1月-8月 佐世保海軍工廠で空母へ改造→1944年6月 マリアナ沖海戦に第三航空戦隊として参加→1944年10月25日 レイテ沖海戦(エンガノ岬沖海戦)で撃沈→1944年10月25日、レイテ沖海戦のエンガノ岬沖海戦でアメリカ軍艦載機の攻撃を受け、直撃弾6発と至近弾多数を受けて浸水・傾斜、同日9時37分頃右舷に転覆し沈没(艦長以下903名戦死)。1944年12月20日除籍。
千歳型水上機母艦の1番艦として建造され、1943年に航空母艦へ改造されて瑞鳳型航空母艦に加わった。姉妹艦千代田と共にエンガノ岬沖海戦で撃沈された。
