1899年7月8日 進水→1900年6月20日 竣工→1904年-1905年 日露戦争で旅順口攻撃・黄海海戦(戦隊旗艦)・日本海海戦(敵艦アドミラル・ウシャーコフ撃沈)・樺太占領護衛に参加→1914年 第一次世界大戦で青島攻略戦に参加→大正-昭和期 練習艦隊に編成され少尉候補生の遠洋航海に従事(1939年まで)→1932年 巡洋艦から海防艦へ類別変更→1942年7月1日 一等巡洋艦に類別変更、太平洋戦争に従軍→1945年12月 特別輸送艦として北支・台湾方面への復員輸送に従事→1945年10月5日除籍。同年12月1日特別輸送艦に指定され復員輸送に従事。1946年7月20日から翌年4月にかけて日立造船舞鶴造船所で解体。
日本海軍がドイツから購入した最初の装甲巡洋艦。日露戦争から太平洋戦争の戦後まで活動した艦。
