1885年3月10日(または3月18日) 進水→1886年2月15日 竣工→1886年 井上良馨大佐指揮下で日本へ回航、明治天皇・皇后の御召艦としても使用→1894年-1895年 日清戦争で豊島沖海戦・黄海海戦・大連/旅順/威海衛/澎湖島攻略作戦に参加→1898年 米西戦争による邦人保護のためマニラに派遣→1900年-1901年 北清事変(義和団の乱)で北清沿岸警備に従事→1904年-1905年 日露戦争で第四戦隊(瓜生外吉少将)旗艦として仁川沖海戦・蔚山沖海戦・日本海海戦に参加→1911年-1912年 千島列島・カムチャッカ半島方面の警備・測量任務に従事→1912年6月26日、北千島へ測量器材輸送中に得撫島沖で座礁し衝角部分が脱落、艦艇類別等級表から削除。同年8月5日除籍、1913年6月5日買受人に船体引渡。
日清戦争開戦の緒戦である豊島沖海戦に参加した艦。1912年、千島列島での測量任務中に得撫島沖で座礁し失われた。
