War record

Raised in the Meiji period; re-formed at Kyoto in April 1943→under the 15th Division, crossed the Chindwin and advanced on Imphal as the left thrust force (code name Datto)→pushed through the steep terrain of the Arakan range with few of its heavier weapons→fought repeatedly for high ground and was worn down by British-Indian firepower→it is recorded that the situation grew so grave that the division commander, Lieutenant General 山内正文, wrote in his diary that it was "unexpected"→the road to Kohima was never opened

After a struggle severe enough that the division commander wrote "this is unexpected" in his diary, the regiment could not fight its way through the Kohima road in the face of British-Indian firepower.
