Withdrew to the rear through guerrilla country in the San Fabian sector→kept fighting for a total of about 550 days, feeding itself from potato fields and on water buffalo→about 600 men were alive at the end of the war
According to the book, the regiment avoided the fully guerrilla-watched rear areas and, relying on neglected sweet-potato fields, kept up a war of attrition with no resupply.
