1931年4月5日 進水→1932年6月30日（就役） 竣工→1941年12月、馬来部隊旗艦としてマレー作戦に参加→1942年1〜4月、蘭印作戦に参加→1942年5月29日〜6月14日、ミッドウェー作戦に攻略部隊本隊として参加→1942年8月8〜9日、第一次ソロモン海戦に参加→1943年11月5日、ラバウル進出直後に米機動部隊の空襲を受ける（このときは被害なし）→1944年10月23〜25日、レイテ沖海戦（サマール沖海戦）に参加し戦没→1944年10月25日、サマール沖海戦で被弾・大破し、駆逐艦藤波により雷撃処分。1944年12月20日除籍。
1944年10月23日のパラワン水道での潜水艦襲撃では、高雄型4隻の中で唯一被害を受けなかった
