1914年3月28日 進水→1915年11月8日 竣工→1941年12月 真珠湾攻撃に向かう機動部隊の後詰め・曳航艦として第一艦隊各艦とともに出撃（K点手前で反転）→1944年9月10日 第二戦隊（山城、扶桑）編制、西村艦隊としてシンガポール方面へ進出→1944年10月22日 ブルネイを出撃しレイテ湾を目指す（西村艦隊）→1944年10月25日 レイテ沖海戦のスリガオ海峡夜戦で米艦隊の雷撃・砲撃を受け弾火薬庫が誘爆、沈没→1944年10月25日、スリガオ海峡夜戦で雷撃を受け沈没。1945年8月31日除籍
扶桑型戦艦のネームシップ。第二次近代化改装後も速力は低いままで、日本戦艦中最も遅い戦艦になったとされる
