1920年5月31日 進水→1921年10月24日（公表日）、同年11月22日引渡 竣工→「長門」とともに日本海軍を象徴する戦艦として国民に親しまれた（ワシントン軍縮会議での廃案問題の末、国民の支援により残置）→太平洋戦争ではミッドウェー作戦や第二次ソロモン海戦等に出動したが、敵水上艦隊と交戦することはなかった→1943年6月8日 柱島泊地に停泊中、三番・四番砲塔付近から爆発を起こし船体が二つに折れて沈没→乗員1,474名（艦隊実習の練習生含む）のうち353名が生存、爆発原因は査問委員会でも特定されず→1943年6月8日、柱島泊地で主砲火薬庫からの爆発を起こし沈没（原因不明）。同年9月1日除籍
沈没の原因は最終的に特定されず、火薬の自然発火説や人為的（放火）爆発説など諸説が残る
