1943年4月7日 進水→1944年3月7日 竣工→1941年7月10日 川崎重工業神戸造船所で起工→1944年3月-4月 兵員・航空機輸送任務で呉からシンガポール、リンガ泊地へ進出→1944年4月15日 第一機動艦隊(小沢治三郎中将)旗艦となる→1944年6月19日 マリアナ沖海戦で被雷、航空機燃料引火による大爆発で沈没→1944年6月19日、マリアナ沖海戦(あ号作戦)でアメリカ潜水艦アルバコアの雷撃(魚雷1本命中)を受けたのち、漏洩した航空機燃料に引火して大爆発を起こし沈没(沈没位置は日本側記録で北緯12度5分、東経138度12分)。1945年8月31日除籍。
日本の空母として初めて飛行甲板に装甲を張った艦。竣工からわずか3か月の艦歴で沈没した。
