Iwo Jima. 19 February 1945, the US 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions landed→resistance continued into mid-March→14 March, the regimental commander burned the colours inside a cave→16 March, the Americans delivered a written demand to surrender→after the deadline was extended by two days, the mouth of the cave was sealed
The enemy commander wrote a letter urging surrender and had it delivered to the mouth of the cave. (see below)
