Raised in the Meiji period→under the 14th Division (Mito)→24 April 1944, moved to Palau→landed on Peleliu and built cave positions in the raised coral→15 September 1944, US forces landed; it counter-attacked at the water's edge and formed close-assault suicide squads→after three months of resistance, organised fighting ended on 24 November; few survived

According to the book, the American forces initially scoffed that they could take the island in as little as four days, but the regiment held out for three months from cave positions in the raised coral reef.
