Guard units (警備隊) 56, harbour guard units (港湾警備隊) 8, defense units (防備隊) 5. Stationed at occupied territories and key points, these units held the defense of one stretch of ground or water. No encyclopedia carries a list of them; this shelf was drawn from a different well — the lists of defense, guard and base units at war-memoire-db.org. Of the 138 units standing in that source, these 69 are the ones that carry a written history (the rest are not yet covered there).
This shelf and the base-force shelf are the only ones with a “History” column. In a world where the lists hold nothing but numbers and names, we have set down the bare bones — formation, parent command, area held, disbandment — in the source's own wording. Accounts of combat, casualties and internment are not part of this catalogue. Names, categories and histories are shown in Japanese for now. The 🟡 after a name marks confidence (index data).

1 佐伯防備隊 🟡 Established in November 1939, with headquarters at Saiki in Oita Prefecture, guarding the Bungo Channel. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和14年 防備隊 昭和14年11月設置．大分県佐伯に司令部を置き，豊後水道の防備に従事．終戦で廃止．
2 下関防備隊 🟡 Newly formed in October 1941 under the Kure Naval District; transferred to the 7th Fleet in April 1945. Abolished at the end of the war, but its personnel continued as the Shimonoseki minesweeping detachment. 昭和16年 防備隊 昭和16年10月新編．呉鎮守府．20年4月第7艦隊に編入．終戦で廃止されるが，下関掃海部として掃海作業に従事した．
3 紀伊防備隊 🟡 Commissioned in November 1939 at Yura Bay in Wakayama Prefecture, under the Kure Naval District, on coastal defense and patrol of the Kii Channel. Placed under the Osaka Guard District in November 1941, and transferred to the 6th Special Attack Flotilla in June 1945. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和14年 防備隊 昭和14年11月和歌山県由良湾で開隊．呉鎮守府所属．紀伊水道の防備・哨戒に従事．16年11月大阪警備府．20年6月第6特攻戦隊に転属．終戦で廃止．

6 東京警備隊 🟡 Formed in July 1944 under the Yokosuka Naval District, with headquarters in Hibiya Park, on air-defense duty over government offices such as the Navy Ministry and over key munitions plants in the Kanto region. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年7月編成．横須賀鎮守府麾下．日比谷公園に本部を置き，海軍省等の重要官庁および関東地区の重要軍需工場などの防空警備に就いた．終戦で廃止．
7 横須賀警備隊 🟡 Newly formed in November 1941, on garrison and air-defense duty around Yokosuka. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和16年 警備隊 昭和16年11月新編．横須賀周辺の警備や防空に従事．終戦で廃止．
8 海軍砲術学校→横須賀海軍砲術学校→横須賀第1警備隊 🟡 Established in 1907 from the gunnery training school at Taura, for research and instruction in gunnery. Renamed the Yokosuka Naval Gunnery School in June 1941 when the Tateyama school was founded, taking charge of naval gunnery. In July 1944 it doubled as the Yokosuka 1st Naval Guard Unit and was turned into a fighting force. Instruction ceased in July 1945; abolished at the end of the war. 明治40年 警備隊 明治40年田浦の砲術練習所を母体に設置．砲術の研究と教育を実施．昭和16年6月館山海軍砲術学校設置に伴い横須賀海軍砲術学校へ改称．海上砲術の研究教育を担当．19年7月横須賀第1警備隊を兼ね，戦力化．20年7月教育を中止，終戦で廃止．
9 館山海軍砲術学校/館山警備隊 🟡 Established in June 1941 for research and instruction in land gunnery, including ground combat and anti-aircraft work. In July 1944 it doubled as the Tateyama Naval Guard Unit and was turned into a fighting force. Both the school and the guard unit were abolished in April 1945 and became the Tateyama branch of the Yokosuka Naval Gunnery School. 昭和16年 警備隊 昭和16年6月設置．陸戦・対空を含む陸上砲術の研究教育に従事．19年7月館山警備隊を兼ね戦力化．20年4月館山砲術学校及び館山警備隊は廃止，横須賀海軍砲術学校館山分校となった．
10 呉警備隊 🟡 Newly formed in November 1941, on garrison and air-defense duty around Kure. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和16年 警備隊 昭和16年11月新編．呉周辺の警備や防空に従事．終戦で廃止．
11 徳山警備隊 🟡 Formed in October 1944 when the Tokuyama detachment of the Kure Naval Guard Unit became independent, with headquarters at the western edge of the 3rd Fuel Depot grounds, guarding the port of Tokuyama. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年10月呉警備隊徳山支隊が独立．第3燃料廠の敷地内西端に司令部を置き，徳山港の防備を担当．終戦で廃止．
12 佐世保警備隊 🟡 Newly formed in November 1941, on garrison and air-defense duty around Sasebo. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和16年 警備隊 昭和16年11月新編．佐世保周辺の警備や防空に従事．終戦で廃止．
13 宮古島警備隊 🟡 Formed in September 1944 by reorganizing the Miyako detachment of the Okinawa Area Base Force, which had been raised that April. Under the Okinawa Area Base Force and the command of the 28th Division; transferred to the Takao Guard District in May 1945. It defended the coastal sector around Yonaha harbour, including the airfield. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年9月，4月新編の沖縄方面根拠地隊宮古派遣隊を改編．沖縄方面根拠地隊所属，第28師団の指揮下．20年5月高雄警備府に転属．飛行場を含む与那覇港周辺の海岸地区を守備．終戦で廃止．
14 石垣島警備隊 🟡 Newly formed in September 1944 under the Okinawa Area Base Force. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年9月新編．沖縄方面根拠地隊．
15 南鳥島警備隊 🟡 Formed in April 1943. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年4月編成．終戦で解隊．
16 南京基地隊→南京警備隊 🟡 Newly formed in November 1939 around the Kure 5th Special Naval Landing Force, directly under the China Area Fleet. Renamed in July 1941. 昭和14年 警備隊 昭和14年11月呉鎮守府第5特別陸戦隊を母体に新編．支那方面艦隊直属．16年7月改称．
17 九江基地隊→九江警備隊 🟡 Formed in November 1939 around units including the 13th Gunboat Division, on garrison duty at Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province, which had been occupied in July 1938, under the 1st China Expeditionary Fleet. In August 1943 that fleet was renamed the Yangtze Area Special Base Force. Abolished at the end of the war; repatriated in May 1946. 昭和14年 警備隊 昭和14年11月，第13砲艇隊などを母体として編成．第1遣支艦隊隷下で13年7月に占領した江西省九江の警備に当たった．18年8月第1遣支艦隊は揚子江方面特別根拠地隊に改称．終戦で廃止．21年5月復員．
18 舟山島基地隊→舟山島警備隊 🟡 Formed in November 1939, directly under the China Area Fleet, on garrison duty on Zhoushan Island. In July 1941 it was transferred to the Shanghai Area Base Force and renamed a naval guard unit. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和14年 警備隊 昭和14年11月編成．支那方面艦隊直属で舟山島の警備を担当．16年7月，上海方面根拠地隊に編入され警備隊に改称．終戦で廃止．
19 舞鶴鎮守府第3特別陸戦隊→第5警備隊→第51警備隊(二代) 🟡 Formed in May 1942, attached to the 5th Fleet. It occupied Kiska in June and was reorganized as the 5th Naval Guard Unit in July, then assigned to the newly formed 51st Base Force in September, on coastal defense of Kiska. After the withdrawal from Kiska it became the 51st Naval Guard Unit in August 1943 and was transferred to the Chishima Area Base Force, defending Shumshu with a detachment on Paramushir. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年5月編成．第5艦隊付属．6月キスカ島を占領．7月第5警備隊に改編．9月新編の第51根拠地隊に配属．キスカ島の防備を担当．キスカ撤退後の18年8月第51警備隊に改編，千島方面根拠地隊に編入．占守島の防衛を担当．幌筵島にも分遣隊を置いた．

22 呉鎮守府第8特別陸戦隊→第14警備隊 🟡 Newly raised April 1943, serving under the 12th Special Base Force on garrison duty at Car Nicobar. Reorganised as the 14th Guard Unit in September and disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年4月新編．第12特別根拠地隊隷下でカーニコバル島警備に従事．9月第14警備隊に改編．終戦で解隊．
23 第17警備隊 🟡 Newly raised October 1943 and assigned to the 13th Base Force, responsible for the defence of the Mergui area on the Burmese coast. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年10月新編．第13根拠地隊に編入．ビルマ沿岸メルギー方面の防備を担当．終戦で廃止．
24 第18警備隊 🟡 Newly raised October 1943 at the Yokosuka 1st Naval Barracks under the 25th Special Base Force, then the 26th from November, garrisoning Manokwari. Absorbed into the 28th Special Base Force in May 1944 and disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年10月横須賀第1海兵団で新編．第25特別根拠地隊．11月第26特別根拠地隊．マノクワリの警備を担当．19年5月第28特別根拠地隊に編入．終戦で解隊．
25 第19警備隊 🟡 Newly raised at Yokosuka in March 1944, absorbing part of a detachment of the 18th Guard Unit. Disbanded in September and merged back into the 18th Guard Unit. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年3月横須賀で新編．一部第18警備隊の派遣隊を編入．9月解隊．第18警備隊に編入．
26 第25警備隊 🟡 Formed December 1942 under the 12th Special Base Force, responsible for the defence of Nancowry in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年12月編成．第12特別根拠地隊に属しアンダマン諸島ナンコウリ島の防備を担当．終戦で解隊．
27 第27警備隊 🟡 Formed at Sorong in January 1945 under the 26th Special Base Force, absorbing the Sorong detachment of the 18th Guard Unit. 昭和20年 警備隊 昭和20年1月ソロンで編成．第26特別根拠地隊所属．第18警備隊ソロン派遣隊を編入．
28 第33警備隊 🟡 Formed March 1944 under the 32nd Special Base Force; from October it garrisoned Zamboanga on Mindanao. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年3月編成．第32特別根拠地隊隷下で10月以降ミンダナオ島ザンボアンガの警備を担当．
29 第36警備隊 🟡 Formed on Negros in May 1944 under the 33rd Special Base Force. Among other duties it sent reinforcements to Leyte. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年5月ネグロス島で編成．第33特根隷下．レイテ島に増援部隊を送るなどした．終戦で解隊．
30 第41警備隊 🟡 Formed April 1942 by reorganising the 4th Defence Unit, responsible for garrisoning the Truk Islands. In March 1945 the units on Moen, Fefan and Uman became independent guard units and it was left with Dublon alone. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月第4防備隊を改編．トラック諸島の警備を担当．20年3月春島・秋島・冬島所在の部隊が警備隊として独立し，夏島のみを担当．終戦で廃止．
31 第42警備隊 🟡 Formed April 1942 by reorganising the Ponape detachment of the 4th Base Force; it garrisoned Ponape until the end of the war. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月第4根拠地隊ポナペ支隊を改編．終戦までポナペ島の守備に就いた．
32 第43警備隊(初代) 🟡 Formed June 1942 by reorganising the 3rd Special Base Force, under the 4th Base Force, on garrison duty at Palau. Absorbed into the newly raised 30th Special Base Force in January 1944 and disbanded. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年6月第3特別根拠地隊を改編．第4根拠地隊．パラオの警備に従事．19年1月新編の第30特別根拠地隊に編入され解隊．
33 第43警備隊(二代) 🟡 Newly raised December 1944 and abolished at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年12月新編．終戦で廃止．
34 第68警備隊→第44警備隊 🟡 Formed December 1943 as the 68th Guard Unit at the Yokosuka 1st Naval Barracks, intended for Brown Atoll, under the 4th Fleet. It reached Truk on 1 February 1944, but around the 11th its destination was changed to Woleai; it suffered losses at sea and in the air raid on Truk, arriving at Woleai late that month. In March 1944 it absorbed the 49th Air Defence Unit at Woleai and was reorganised as the 44th Guard Unit under the 4th Base Force, defending Woleai. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年12月第68警備隊として横須賀第1海兵団にて編成．ブラウン進出予定．第4艦隊所属．19年2月1日トラック着，11日ごろメレヨンに配備地変更．海没及びトラック島空襲で被害．同月下旬メレヨン着．19年3月在メレヨンの第49防空隊を加え第44警備隊に改編．第4根拠地隊に編入．メレヨンの防衛に従事．終戦で解隊．
35 第45警備隊 🟡 Formed March 1944 from part of the 30th Special Base Force and assigned to the 30th Base Force, defending the main island of Palau, Angaur and Peleliu. Disbanded at the end of the war. It appears to have taken over the personnel of the first 43rd Guard Unit, disbanded that January. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年3月第30特別根拠地隊の一部で編成．第30根拠地隊に編入．パラオ本島，アンガウル島，ペリリュー島の防衛に従事．終戦で解隊．1月に解隊した第43警備隊(初代)の人員を引き継いでいる模様．

37 第47警備隊 🟡 Formed March 1945 from units on Moen, including the 41st Guard Unit and the 85th Submarine Base Unit, under the 4th Base Force. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和20年 警備隊 昭和20年3月，第41警備隊や第85潜水艦基地隊などの春島所在部隊員をもって編成．第4根拠地隊隷下．終戦で解隊．

40 第62警備隊 🟡 Formed April 1942 by reorganising the first 51st Guard Unit, under the 6th Base Force, responsible for the defence of Imiej in Jaluit Atoll. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月第51警備隊(初代)を改編．第6根拠地隊に所属しヤルート環礁イミエジ島の防備を担当．終戦で解隊．
41 第63警備隊 🟡 Formed April 1942 by reorganising the 52nd Guard Unit and assigned to the 6th Base Force, on garrison duty at Taroa Atoll. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月第52警備隊を改編．第6根拠地隊に編入されタロア環礁の警備に従事．終戦で解隊．
42 第52警備隊 🟡 Newly raised February 1944 with its headquarters at Musashi on Paramushir, responsible for the defence of the northern Kuriles. Most of the unit moved to Hokkaido in May 1945. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年2月新編．幌筵島武蔵に本部を置き，北千島方面の防衛を担当，20年5月大部が北海道へ移動．終戦で解隊．
43 第61警備隊 🟡 Formed at Kwajalein in April 1942 by reorganising the 6th Defence Unit and assigned to the 6th Base Force, with a detachment sent to Roi. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月クエゼリンで第6防備隊を改編．第6根拠地隊に編入．一部をルオットに派遣した．
44 第64警備隊 🟡 Formed April 1942 under the 6th Base Force, responsible for the defence of Wotje Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Disbanded at the end of the war. This was the unit of Sato Tomigoro (Fragments of Japan #010); the wartime diary of the 64th Guard Unit survives at the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records (Ref. C08030497100). 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月編成，第6根拠地隊に属しマーシャル諸島ウォッゼ（ウォッチェ）環礁の防備を担当．終戦で解隊．　佐藤冨五郎（紙片の日本史 #010）が所属した部隊。当時の第64警備隊戦時日誌がアジア歴史資料センターに現存する（Ref.C08030497100）
45 第65警備隊 🟡 Formed December 1941 by reorganising the Uchida unit, a special naval landing force attached to the 4th Fleet, and assigned to the 6th Base Force, on garrison duty at Wake. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和16年 警備隊 昭和16年12月第4艦隊付属特別陸戦隊内田部隊を改編．第6根拠地隊に編入されウェーキ島の警備に従事．終戦で解隊．
46 第66警備隊 🟡 Formed June 1943 from the units on Mili, under the 6th Base Force. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年6月に在ミレ島部隊で編成．第6根拠地隊．
47 第67警備隊 🟡 Formed February 1943 from detachments of the 5th Base Force and the 43rd Guard Unit, under the 4th Base Force, responsible for garrisoning Nauru. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年2月第5根拠地隊の派遣隊と第43警備隊の派遣隊で編成．第4根拠地隊隷下．ナウル島の警備を担当．終戦で解隊．
48 第81警備隊 🟡 Newly raised April 1942 when the 8th Special Base Force was reorganised as the 8th Base Force, built around the former Maizuru 2nd Special Naval Landing Force. Under the 8th Base Force it garrisoned Rabaul, and when that force was disbanded in December 1944 it was attached to the Southeast Area Fleet. Abolished at the end of the war. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月，第8特別根拠地隊が第8根拠地隊に改編される際に新編．旧舞鶴鎮守府第2特別陸戦隊の兵力が基幹．第8根拠地隊に所属しラバウルの警備を担当．19年12月第8根拠地隊解隊に伴い南東方面艦隊付属となる．終戦で廃止．
49 第82警備隊(初代) 🟡 Formed April 1942, when the 8th Special Base Force became the 8th Base Force, from the troops at Lae and Salamaua. Assigned to the newly raised 7th Base Force in July 1942, it moved towards Sio in September 1943 and was disbanded in March 1944, its personnel joining the 27th Special Base Force. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年4月，第8特別根拠地隊が第8根拠地隊に改編される際にラエ・サラモア所在の兵力で編成．第8根拠地隊に編入．17年7月新編の第7根拠地隊に編入．18年9月シオに向け転進．19年3月解隊．人員は第27特別根拠地隊に編入された．
50 第82警備隊(二代) 🟡 Formed May 1945 from personnel in the Buin area, under the 1st Base Force, responsible for the defence of that area. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和20年 警備隊 昭和20年5月ブイン地区所在員をもって編成．第1根拠地隊に属し同地区の防備を担当．終戦で解隊．
51 第83警備隊 🟡 Formed at Kavieng in March 1943 and assigned to the 8th Base Force, then to the 14th Base Force in December. Disbanded at the end of the war. This entry also covers the 11th Lookout Unit. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年3月カビエンで編成．第8根拠地隊に編入．12月第14根拠地隊に編入．終戦で解隊．本項では第11衛所隊も扱う．
52 第84警備隊(初代) 🟡 Formed July 1942 by reorganising the Tulagi assault force — the Kure 3rd Special Naval Landing Force and one company each of the 81st Guard Unit. It deployed to Tulagi, Gavutu and Guadalcanal; the survivors returned to Rabaul in February 1943 and the unit was disbanded that April. 昭和17年 警備隊 昭和17年7月呉鎮守府第3特別陸戦隊と第81警備隊各1個中隊のツラギ攻略隊を改編．ツラギ，ガブツ，ガダルカナルに展開．18年2月生存者はラバウルに帰還．4月解隊．
53 第84警備隊(二代) 🟡 Newly raised December 1944 from the personnel of the Rabaul Naval Transport Department and other units disbanded at that time, defending Rabaul. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年12月解隊したラバウル海軍運輸部等の人員で新編．ラバウルの防衛に従事．終戦で解隊．
54 第85警備隊(初代) 🟡 Newly raised at Kure in August 1943. The commander and twenty men went forward to Finschhafen; the main body reached Rabaul in October and joined them at Kanoshi in November. In January 1944 it came under the command of the 51st Division and moved to Hollandia in February. Disbanded March 1944 and absorbed into the 27th Special Base Force. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年8月呉で新編．司令以下20名がフィンシュハーフェンに進出．10月主力がラバウルに進出．11月カノシで合流．19年1月第51師団長の指揮下に入る．2月ホーランディアに転進．19年3月解隊．第27特別根拠地隊に編入．
55 第85警備隊(二代) 🟡 Newly raised December 1944 from units at Rabaul, attached to the Southeast Area Fleet and defending Rabaul. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年12月在ラバウルの部隊で新編．南東方面艦隊附属．ラバウルの防衛に従事．終戦で解隊．
56 第86警備隊 🟡 Newly raised at Kure in August 1943 and sent to Rabaul in October, on garrison duty at Jacquinot on New Britain. Moved to Rabaul in February 1944 and abolished at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年8月呉で新編．10月ラバウルに進出．ニューブリテン島ジャキノットの警備に従事．19年2月ラバウルに移動．終戦で廃止．
57 第87警備隊 🟡 Formed on Buka in September 1943 under the 1st Base Force, responsible for the defence of Buka. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和18年 警備隊 昭和18年9月ブカ島で編成．第1根拠地隊．ブカ島の防備を担当．終戦で解隊．
58 呉鎮守府第6特別陸戦隊(二代)→第88警備隊(初代) 🟡 Formed November 1942 as the second Kure 6th Special Naval Landing Force, a heavily armed landing force built around flat-trajectory and anti-aircraft guns, under the 8th Combined Special Naval Landing Force. From December it deployed to Munda on New Georgia — seven companies, some 2,000 men. Reorganised as the 88th Guard Unit in December 1943, it fell back to Lorengau on Manus in the Admiralty Islands and defended it, absorbing the 31st Lookout Unit there in March 1944. American forces landed on 15 March. 59 第88警備隊(二代) 🟡 Formed May 1945 from personnel in the Buin area following the disbandment of the 1st Transport Unit and others, responsible for the defence of Tonolei on Bougainville. Disbanded at the end of the war. 昭和20年 警備隊 昭和20年5月，第1輸送隊などの解隊に伴いブイン地区所在員をもって編成．ブーゲンビル島トノレイの防備を担当．終戦で解隊された．
60 横須賀鎮守府第7特別陸戦隊→第89警備隊 🟡 Formed November 1942 as the Yokosuka 7th Special Naval Landing Force, a heavy-artillery landing force equipped with naval guns. It moved to Kavieng in October 1943 and was reorganised as the 89th Guard Unit that December, thereafter garrisoning New Ireland under the 8th Base Force and, from December 1944, the 14th Base Force. 61 第91警備隊 🟡 Formed at Kau on Halmahera in April 1944, absorbing elements of the 18th and 19th Guard Units. Disbanded in September and merged into the 18th Guard Unit. 昭和19年 警備隊 昭和19年4月ハルマヘラ島カウで編成．第18，19警備隊から一部を編入．9月解隊．第18警備隊に編入．
